The Department of Physics and Optical Science offers programs leading to both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Our Department’s relatively small size makes it possible for students and faculty to interact daily in coursework or research projects. The student-teacher ratio for students majoring in physics is about 3:1.

Students can be involved with the broader physics community by participation in the Society for Physics Students and other campus organizations. We have weekly seminars that enhance the formal coursework by providing students with the opportunity to learn from and interact with leading scientists from around the world. Students majoring in physics become prepared for careers in industry, medicine, and education. Many of our students seek graduate or professional degrees.

Introductory courses in general physics or astronomy are offered to all students so that they may meet UNC Charlotte’s general education requirement. Advanced courses in modern physics, classical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, optics, thermal physics, and quantum mechanics lead to either a B.A. or B.S. degree with options such as applied physics or a secondary teacher licensure.

At the graduate level, the department offers a Master of Science in Applied Physics degree with research concentrations in applied optics or biophysics. Both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Optical Science and Engineering are offered through an interdisciplinary program administered in the Department of Physics and Optical Science.
